Things worth understanding before you invest in SEO

What does an SEO audit actually give you?

An SEO audit is not a list of problems. It is a ranked map of every opportunity and obstacle between your site and the organic traffic it should be generating. It tells you which pages are losing clicks and why, which keywords you could realistically win, what competitors are doing that you are not, and where your site is leaking authority. Done properly, it produces a sequenced action plan specific enough that a developer or writer can execute without follow-up questions. The audit is the strategy — not a precursor to it.

How does SEO implementation actually work?

Implementation means executing the audit in the right order: fixing technical blockers first so Google can crawl and trust the site, then improving on-page signals so the right pages rank for the right queries, then building authority through internal linking and off-page signals. Each layer depends on the one before it. Schema on a page Google cannot index achieves nothing. A perfectly optimised page with no internal links accumulates no authority. The sequence matters as much as the actions themselves.

Why is SEO iterative — and never really done?

Search results are a live competition. When you improve a page, competitors adapt. When Google updates its algorithm, priorities shift. When your business adds a new offer, the keyword landscape changes. An SEO strategy not revisited every quarter is a strategy built on stale data. The sites that consistently win organic traffic treat search as an ongoing system with regular inputs — not a project with a completion date.

Why won’t less than 3 months produce meaningful results?

Google’s indexing and ranking cycles mean on-page changes take 6 to 12 weeks to register in search results. Month 1 is setup: fixing blockers, establishing tracking, executing the highest-priority changes. Month 2 is when the first data appears — early signal, not conclusions. Month 3 is when you have enough before-and-after data to know what is working and what the next cycle should prioritise. Anything shorter produces no measurable outcome and no basis for decisions.

How it works

Audit first. Then execute.

Every engagement begins with a complete audit that stands alone as a deliverable. Implement it with your own team — or bring me in to execute it with you.

01 — AUDIT + STRATEGY

The complete picture

A 12-phase audit covering every layer of your site’s organic performance: technical health, content architecture, keyword positioning, competitor gaps, AI search readiness, internal linking, and off-page authority. Delivered as a master workbook, a client-facing strategy deck, and a sequenced P1–P4 action plan precise enough to execute without a translator.

One-time deliverable
02 — IMPLEMENTATION

Structured execution

Three months of scoped implementation against the audit’s action plan. Each month has defined deliverables: P1 actions and tracking setup in Month 1, P2 execution and first data review in Month 2, P3 work and a full before/after report in Month 3. Scope is fixed per month — no open-ended briefs, no scope creep.

3-month block
03 — QUARTERLY RENEWAL

Live audit, continuous momentum

Every 3 months we sit down together: review results, refresh the audit with live data, revise priorities, and plan the next execution block. The audit becomes a continuously evolving document — not a report that collects dust. The quarterly refresh is included in every renewal, never charged separately.

Renewable indefinitely
The framework

12 phases. Every layer covered.

Each phase produces documented findings that feed the next. No phase is skipped. Every decision traces back to the primary conversion goal.

Phase 01

Foundation & Business Context

Define the entity, ideal client profile, revenue goals, primary conversion URL, and baseline KPIs. Nothing is optimised until we know exactly what organic traffic must drive.

Phase 02

Technical & Crawl Health Audit

Full site crawl identifying indexing blockers, redirect chains, canonical errors, Core Web Vitals failures, mobile usability issues, and broken structured data. Technical issues are fixed before any content or ranking work begins.

Phase 03

E-E-A-T & Entity Signal Audit

Evaluate the trust signals Google and AI systems use to assess credibility: Knowledge Panel status, Wikipedia presence, author schema, About page depth, media footprint, and third-party citations.

Phase 04

Competitive & Keyword Intelligence

Identify true organic competitors — not just perceived rivals. Map the keyword gap, audit competitor backlink profiles, and flag position 5–15 pages where a title rewrite could move you to page one.

Phase 05

Content Inventory & Thin Content Audit

Every indexed page scored and assigned a decision: Keep, Improve, Consolidate, or Remove. Keyword cannibalization flagged. Content gaps identified against competitor data and ICP search behaviour.

Phase 06

Content Architecture & Cluster Design

Build the topical cluster structure that passes authority and guides users toward conversion. Every URL mapped to a cluster, a funnel stage (TOFU/MOFU/BOFU), and a documented conversion path.

Phase 07

On-Page SEO Optimisation

Rewrite title tags and meta descriptions for priority pages. Audit H1s, definition blocks, word count vs. intent, and CTA alignment per funnel stage. BOFU pages receive conversion-first treatment.

Phase 08

GEO & AI Search Optimisation

Optimise content to be cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Includes a Prompt → Content Gap Matrix mapping 20+ ICP AI queries to existing content and flagging every gap.

Phase 09

Internal Linking System

Build deliberate link architecture to distribute PageRank and guide users toward conversion. Every MOFU+ page linked to the primary BOFU destination. Orphan pages eliminated. Anchor text optimised throughout.

Phase 10

Off-Page Authority & Link Building

Close the backlink gap with competitors. Identify unlinked brand mentions, journalist outreach opportunities, guest post targets, and broken backlinks to recover — prioritised by domain authority and topical relevance.

Phase 11

Tracking, Attribution & Dashboard

GA4 key event implementation, GTM configuration, UTM parameters, cross-domain tracking, and first-touch attribution. A dedicated client dashboard is built, verified, and handed over. Measurement is a prerequisite, never an afterthought.

Phase 12

Prioritised Action Plan & Cadence

All findings synthesised into a P1–P4 action plan. Every item has an owner, a due date, and a specific expected impact tied to a KPI. Status updated weekly. The plan becomes the roadmap for the implementation block.

Quarterly rhythm

What happens every 3 months

Each quarterly cycle produces a results review, a refreshed audit, a revised action plan, and a new execution block — agreed together before anything begins.

Weeks 1–2

Results review

Rankings, organic sessions, CTA clicks, conversions. What moved, what did not, and why.

Week 2

Audit refresh

Live data updated. Priority scores recalculated. New gaps and opportunities surfaced.

Week 3

Next block planned

Revised action plan agreed together. Owners, due dates, and scope confirmed before execution begins.

Weeks 4–13

Execution block

Implementation runs against the plan. Monthly check-ins. Dashboard updated continuously.

FAQ

Common questions about the process

Questions asked before almost every engagement — answered plainly.

Do I need the retainer, or can I implement the audit myself?

You can take the audit and implement it with your own team or developer. The action plan is written to be self-sufficient — specific enough to execute without follow-up. The retainer is for clients who want implementation handled and a named person accountable for results.

What is GEO and why does it matter now?

Generative Engine Optimisation makes your content directly citable by AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews. When someone asks an AI about your topic or a problem you solve, GEO determines whether your content is what the AI surfaces. Standard SEO does not address this. GEO does.

How is a quarterly renewal different from just extending the retainer?

A renewal is a structured reset, not an automatic continuation. We review the past 3 months of data, update the audit with current rankings and competitor changes, and agree the next block together. You decide whether to continue based on results — not on a contract that auto-renews. The audit refresh is always included.

How do I know which tier my site falls into?

Check Google Search Console → Pages report, or search site:yourdomain.com in Google and count the indexed results. Under 30 indexed pages is Tier 1. Between 30 and 150 is Tier 2. Over 150 is Tier 3. If you are unsure, get in touch and we will confirm it together in a 15-minute call before you commit to anything.

What does the client dashboard actually show?

Built around your specific KPIs, not a generic template. Typically: organic sessions by content cluster, priority page ranking positions, CTA click rates, form submissions or purchases attributed to organic, and CTR trends from Search Console. Designed for a 5-minute read on progress without interpreting raw GA4 data yourself.

What tools do you use and do I need premium subscriptions?

Full audits use Google Search Console, GA4, GTM, Ahrefs, and Screaming Frog. You do not need your own Ahrefs licence — that analysis is covered. You do need GSC and GA4 access verified before work begins. If tracking is not in place, that is the first thing we fix.

Is this right for a personal brand or solo consultant?

Yes. The framework was built with personal brands explicitly in mind — coaches, consultants, keynote speakers, authors. Tier 1 pricing reflects that scale. The E-E-A-T and GEO phases are particularly high-value for personal brands, where Google’s trust signals map directly to individual credibility and media presence.

What is explicitly excluded from the retainer scope?

Content creation, copywriting, paid advertising, custom development beyond basic CMS edits, CRO beyond CTA placement, and brand design. These exclusions are documented in writing before any engagement starts. If you need these services, I can point you to the right specialists.
