The problem it solves
The citation problem in AI-generated content is measurable, and it is worse than most teams assume.
In a study published in Scientific Reports, researchers Walters and Wilder analysed 636 bibliographic citations across 84 AI-generated literature reviews. They found that 55% of GPT-3.5 citations and 18% of GPT-4 citations were entirely fabricated. Worse, among the citations that referred to real sources, 24% of the GPT-4 ones still contained substantive errors — wrong authors, wrong journals, wrong years.
Read that second number again. Even when the model cites something real, roughly one in four of those references misrepresents what it points to. A fabricated citation is at least detectable if someone checks. A subtly wrong one usually survives review.
This is not a prompting problem. Language models generate citations the same way they generate any other text: by predicting plausible sequences. A citation that looks correct and a citation that is correct are produced by the identical mechanism. Asking the model to “only use real sources” asks it to do something its architecture does not do.
Why this matters more in 2026 than it did in 2023
Two shifts have raised the cost of publishing an unverified claim.
First, fewer people click through to check. The Pew Research Center tracked the browsing behaviour of 900 US adults across 68,879 Google searches and found that users clicked a traditional search result on just 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, versus 15% where it did not. Clicks on links inside the AI summary itself occurred on only 1% of visits. Users were also more likely to end their session entirely — 26% of pages with an AI summary versus 16% without.

Analysis by Previsible of 6.77 million LLM-driven sessions between November 2024 and May 2026 found that ChatGPT alone commands 92.4% of trackable standalone LLM referral traffic. Traffic from these surfaces is small relative to organic search, but it is growing fast and it converts differently — the visitor arrives having already been told your page is authoritative.
The research on how to earn those citations points in one direction. In the foundational paper on Generative Engine Optimization, presented at KDD 2024, Aggarwal and colleagues found that adding citations, quotations from relevant sources, and statistics boosted a source’s visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%.
So the exact elements most likely to be hallucinated — the stats, the quotes, the citations — are also the elements most likely to get you cited. That is the tension Optix is designed around.
